Shielding Your Teeth from Decay
Sealants are highly effective in preventing tooth decay on molars and premolars, which are prone to cavities due to their grooves. They are typically applied to children’s permanent molars and premolars between ages 6 and 14, but adults with healthy molars can also benefit. The application process involves cleaning, drying, applying a liquid solution to the teeth, and curing it with a special light to harden the sealant. Sealants create a barrier against plaque and acids and can last several years before needing reapplication. However, they do not replace regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings, as they do not protect between the teeth.
